TIDWELL, WILMA ELIZABETH ROBERTS - was born to parents Joe and Bessie Roberts, in Browns Creek, KY, on Friday, January 9, 1931. Wilma joined brothers and sisters, Dave, John, Charlie, Walter, Cora, Flora, Rose, Lillian, Jean, and later baby brother Lloyd was born. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, and sisters and, at the age of 81 years and six days, was the last member of her family to depart. Wilma was a graduate of Rockhold High School. Shortly thereafter she came to Jellico and went to work at the old Jellico Hospital. Wilma could tell many stories of working there with Doctors Ausmus, Watts, Prater, and others. Wilma helped bring expert care to many individuals and learned all about nursing while on the job. She had received a nursing scholarship but met James Tidwell, Jr. in 1948 after his return from World War II Service in the US Navy. They married on October 15, 1949 and were together for nearly fifty years when Junior passed on July 28, 1999. Junior and Wilma had three children: Susan Jane Tidwell Norton Brown of Mud Creek, KY, (husband Dale), William Ray Tidwell (wife Cheryl) of Jellico, TN, and Mark Joseph Tidwell (wife Yvonne) of Highcliff, TN. Wilma has six grandchildren to whom she was known as "Mammy": Leslie Raychelle Tipton (husband Kevin) of Knoxville, TN, Erica Renee Elliott (husband Jason) of Clinton, TN, William Travis Tidwell of Jellico, TN, Matthew Jonathan Norton of Mud Creek, KY, Heather Rose Norton of Knoxville, TN, and Rebekah Jo Tidwell of Highcliff, TN. Wilma has two great grandchildren: Dalton Kade Tipton of Knoxville, TN, and Norah Kate Elliot of Clinton, TN. Wilma has one step-great grandchild: Kevin Tipton, Jr. of Knoxville, TN. Wilma led an extraordinarily active and full life until her passing on January 15, 2012, surrounded by her entire family at the University of TN Medical Center. Wilma substituted school for many years, was a homemaker, caretaker, and volunteered many hours at Jellico Public Library. Wilma was a most faithful member of Jellico United Methodist Church, where she served as choir director until her passing. Wilma never desired much for worldly treasure. Her children and grandchildren, family and friends, were what her entire life revolved around. Wilma was a devout fan of the Kentucky Wildcats, often laughing that "Junior married a Wildcat!" Some of her best times in life were spent with her brothers and sisters cheering for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Wilma loved helping others, visiting the sick, singing the songs she had written, "spirited" discussion, driving her car wherever and whenever she pleased, in any weather, and attending every local event that occurred. Wilma was always on the go and was known affectionately by many all over the area as "Momma" or "Big Momma" Tidwell (though she was a petite lady). Wilma had a burning desire in her heart to serve her Lord and Savior and never limited her enthusiasm to just one church body. She attended many churches around the area. Her love for praising God through song and testimony shall be sorely missed by her family and a tremendous circle of friends and acquaintances. Funeral Services will be held 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Jellico United Methodist Church in Jellico, TN, with Rev. Mahan Archer and Rev. Johnny Walker officiating.
