Charles Oscar Braden

Charles Oscar Braden, age 92, of Speedwell passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012.  Member of Braden Chapel Baptist Church.   WWII  US Army Air Corps veteran.  Preceded in death by wife, Winnie Hopper Braden; parents, Calvin & Martha Grubb Braden; sister, Ruth Braden; brothers, Ed, Roy (Pete) & Hayes (Dime) Braden.

Survivors:

Vanessa Gaylor Milhorn

August 5, 1953-October 30, 2012

On October the 30th, 2012, Vanessa lost her courageous battle with a long illness at Rockcastle Hospital and Respiratory Care Center. Vanessa was the daughter of the late Doris Paige Gaylor and late James Edward Gaylor.

Vanessa attended East Tennessee State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in Education. Vanessa went on to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she received her master’s degree in Special Education. She taught Special Education and Speech during her career as an educator at several schools in the Campbell school system at schools including Lafollette Middle School and East Lafollette Elementary School. During her career she touched the lives of many students and colleagues alike and she loved and respected her chosen profession for the duration of her career that spanned over 30 years.

Vanessa enjoyed many hobbies including collecting a variety of treasures. She was also an avid sports fan and she enjoyed watching her favorite sports teams including the Lady Vols, Tennessee football and the Chicago Cubs. Vanessa’s favorite pastime was spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends and she loved telling and listening to stories about her children and grandchildren’s many adventures. Vanessa also was quite fond of the theater and she enjoyed countless evenings going to Murder Mystery dinners, dinner theater events and local plays with her closest friends.

Vanessa was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake City, Tennessee as well as a member of the Tennessee Educators Association. 

Vanessa is survived by her children, Mr. and Mrs. James David (Robin) Milhorn and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Robert (Carrie) Milhorn and five grandchildren, Hannah, Connor, Reese, Clarice and Taylor.  She was preceded in death by her brother Claude David Gaylor.

Vanessa’s family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff at Rock Castle Respitory Care Center for their unwavering care, love and support that they showed Vanessa during the time that she was under their care. Vanessa appreciated the family atmosphere at Rock Castle and in lieu of flowers, Vanessa requested that any gifts be made to the Rock Castle Hospital and Respiratory Care Center in Mount Vernon, KY or the National Kidney Foundation. 

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Lake City. Funeral will follow visitation at 7:00 PM with Rev. Mike Jones officiating. At the request of the family, her interment will be private.

Roy Barton Adkins

Roy Barton Adkins, 86, a hero to so many, entered his heavenly home on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 surrounded by his loving family in his home in Monroe.

Born January 24, 1926 in Alcoa, Tennessee, to the late Robert and Katherine (Chapman) Adkins, he brought joy and love to all who knew him.

The twinkle in his eyes will be most missed by Ernestine, his beloved wife of 59 years, his son, Roy Jr. (Jackie) Adkins of Monroe, and two daughters, Donna (Bill) Dawson of Sedley, Virginia and Lisa Adkins (Nigel Melville) of Ann Arbor. Seven grandchildren: Jeramy (Rachel), Kim (Andy), Seth (Dawn), Brandon, Kristen (Nick), Lauren and William. Twelve great-grandchildren: Abbigail, Raina, Drew, Grace, Holden, Peyton, Noah, Kendall, Elivia, Grant, Will, and Graysen. And from LaFollette, Tennessee, sisters Pauline (Charles) Martin and Betty (James) Gamble and sister-in-law Flora Adkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Raymond and R. C., and his sister Ruth (Carl) Sharpe.

A humble WWII Army veteran, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat action after crossing the Saur River into the Siegfried line. He was wounded in Trier, Germany in 1945 and received the Purple Heart.

In 1955, he moved from Lake City, Tennessee to make his home in Michigan. After 33 years of service he retired from GM Powertrain in 1988 as a pipefitter. He and his wife also owned the Monroe Bridal Aisle for 40 years.

Roy was a faithful member of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, teacher, choir member, spiritual mentor and encouraging friend. He was known as a patient gardener, impatient fisherman and a gentle fisher of men.

Friends may call Friday from 1-8 PM at Bacarella Funeral Home, Masonic service at 6pm. A funeral celebrating his life will be at 10 AM Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church, where he will lie in state after 9 AM.

Visitation will be on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Graveside service will be on Monday, November 5, 2012 at Norris Memorial Gardens in Norris at 11:00 AM.

He loved his Lord, his family and friends, his church, and his country. A silent giant, Roy taught everyone in his life how to love. He is a soldier of the cross who simply faded away into glory.
